Ukrainia About the roundtable
The Ukraine-Russia crisis has significant implications for food supply chains. Together Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat exports, 19% of exported corn and 80% of exports of sunflower oil, the third most traded vegetable oil internationally. Sunflower oil is mostly used in the food industry, where it can be segmented into: use as an ingredient in processed foods (e.g. margarine, sauces, mayonnaise, frying, etc) and use as a final product in bottled form as a multi-purpose cooking oil. Additional uses of sunflower oil includes as an emollient in cosmetics formulations. As the conflict continues, the supply of this oil is jeopardized and the industry is challenged to come up with alternatives for this ingredient. Replacing one ingredient with another is not very easy and many aspects such as nutritional quality, food safety (exposure to contaminants), and regulatory issues have to be taken into account. The ramifications of this crisis unfortunately goes way beyond these issues and raise concerns about food security and food fraud amongst others.
This digital roundtable aimed to discuss potential short-term solutions to address the critical supply of oils and other exports as well as longer term actions to improve the resilience of our food system.

Practical guidance for validation studies from start to finish

About the webinar

Food business operators (FBOs) are required to implement a food safety management plan and document that their control measures are effective to control the identified hazards. The effectiveness of control measures must be validated prior to implementation of the food safety management plan. Validation studies provide evidence that control measures are capable of effectively controlling the identified hazards and therefore meet the process control objective. Determining key requirements for a validation of control measures involves significant challenges such as hazard(s) identification, setting critical control parameters, understanding the interactions between the hazard and the food and collecting adequate scientific, technical and/or experimental evidence. Recently, an international, multidisciplinary expert group, convened under the aegis of the European Branch of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI Europe), generated a guidance document on validation studies for lethal control measures for foodborne pathogens. In this webinar, expert group members from industry and academia will demonstrate how in practice to plan and perform a validation study, and to analyze the data in order to establish effective control measures.

Objectives

  • Introduce scientific topics related to mycotoxins and mycotoxins mitigation.
  • Explore opportunities for collaborative research between Europe and Latin America.
  • Strengthen interaction between young researchers from Europe and Latin America with ILSI Europe and ILSI Brasil.

Context

The Food Contaminants Task Force of ILSI Europe, University of Minho, and the Food Safety Task Force of ILSI Brasil, were proud to announce their joint digital seminar for Early Career Scientist.

The 2021 edition focused on mycotoxins research and mitigation strategies in Europe and Latin America.

Programme

  • 14.00-14.05: Welcome - Dr Siméon Bourdoux (ILSI Europe, BE)
  • 14.05-14.25: Mycotoxins decontamination approaches - Dr Thalita Calado (University of Minho, PT)
  • 14.25-14.45: Cold plasma technology for controlling fungi and mycotoxins in food - Prof. Liliana O. Rocha (Universidade Estadual de Campinas, BR)
  • 14-45-15.05: Evaluation of near infrared spectral information as quick assessment of enniatin contamination in barley - Dr Elem Caramês (Universidade Estadual de Campinas, BR)
  • 15.05-15.45: Break - recorded presentations
  • 15.45-16.30: Panel discussion - Chairs: Michele Suman, Prof. Armando Venancio

Submission of abstracts

The Organising Committee launched the call for abstracts (for live web presentations) for the Early Career Scientists Seminar 2021, taking place via live web streaming on December 15th, 2021, 14.00-17.00 CET.

We invited scientists who obtained their highest degree (MsC or PhD) within the past 10 years to take this opportunity to boost the visibility of their work in front of an audience made up of scientists and experts from Europe and Latin America.

This year the abstracts focused on 'Mycotoxins research and mitigation strategies'

  • The best submissions were invited to present their work as keynote speaker in the live session.
  • The other submissions were invited to record a video of their presentation that will be shared during the event.

  3. Will the Green Deal and Chemical Strategy for Sustainability affect future approaches for risk assessment and risk management of migrants?

15.00-15.15: Break

15.15-16.45: Report on the breakout sessions

16.45-17.00: Conclusion & Closing

In the past 5 years, the Packaging Materials Task Force has been building a set of tools to demonstrate the safety of food contact materials and articles (FCMAs) regarding non-intentionally added substances (NIAS). The task force has already published two documents on those substances and bioassays for assessing their toxicology. A third document is expected early 2022 and will provide best practices for analytical approaches in identifying and quantifying NIAS.

The Task Force organised a workshop to discuss the potential need for guidance for a harmonised approach to perform risk assessment and risk management of migrants from all FCMs.

During the workshop, invited stakeholders have been invited to share their perspective on:

  • Availability and applicability of guidance for intentionally added substances (IAS);
  • Availability and applicability of guidance for NIAS;
  • What is the need for non-plastics FCMs?
  • What is foreseen in terms of risk management of migrants from FCMs in Europe in line with the Farm-to-Fork strategy?
  • What are the hurdles and research need to reach a harmonised approach?

The input has been fed into a discussion to determine if there was a need for initiatives to provide harmonized guidelines for safety assessment and risk management of potential migrants from FCMAs.
