We are thrilled to announce the start of the BIOFIN-EU project, funded by the Euopean Union and officially launched on January 1, 2024. This groundbreaking initiative seeks to establish a comprehensive framework and technology to facilitate nature-positive investments, reshaping the landscape of finance towards sustainability.

Unlocking Finance to Protect and Restore Biodiversity

The BIOFIN-EU consortium, composed of 13 partners, is a unique blend of professions and expertise joining on a shared mission: to challenge traditional notions of finance and explore the potential of capital flows to benefit biodiversity. Can our financial systems be harnessed to drive positive environmental outcomes?

Ecologists, economists, data scientists, social entrepreneurs, communication specialists, and more will collaborate over the course of three years to pioneer innovative approaches for capturing, aggregating, and analyzing biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) data. The overarching objective is to streamline transaction and reporting costs associated with financing initiatives that promote the protection and restoration of biodiversity.

Recognizing Our Dependence on Nature

Society's reliance on ecosystem services is undeniable, yet often underestimated. Our supply chains, economies, and overall well-being are intricately linked to the health and biodiversity of our ecosystems. It's time to shift our perspective from viewing nature restoration as a cost to recognizing the invaluable rewards it offers.

With the launch of the BIOFIN-EU project, we embark on a journey to redefine the relationship between finance and nature, aiming to create actionable guidance and mechanisms to implement innovative solutions.

BIOFIN-EU will operate for three years, concluding on December 31, 2026, with the hope that its impacts will endure well beyond. Join us in shaping a future where finance works in harmony with nature.
