Investigating new technologies and methodologies for food intake and dietary exposure assessment

Background

Assessing the intake and exposure of individuals to the many different substances in food is fundamental to ensure safe and healthy food.

Objectives

This Task Force aims at contributing to relevant nutrition and health recommendations as well as improving the estimates of dietary intake for safety assessments.

Impact

The Task Force contributed to the 13th European Congress of Nutrition (FENS2019) on 16 October 2019.
Also, the workshop on ‘The Potential for Incorporating Data on Occurrence and Consumer Loyalty into Dietary Exposure Models’ was organised as a FENS satellite event, on 14 October 2019.
The publication Eldridge et al., 2019 has been widely adopted by experts as definitively highlighting the basic must-have traits and capabilities for tools to be used in technology-aided intake and exposure assessment research. It has been presented both at European and international congresses (e.g. FENS and ICN-IUNS).

The Potential for Incorporating Data on Occurrence and Consumer Loyalty into Dietary Exposure Models

Background & Objectives
Revise and improve the current exposure and assessment models by incorporating more precise data on the frequency of consumption.

This activity aims to:

  • review the available information on both additive occurrence and consumer loyalty;
  • consider potential methods for incorporating occurrence data into exposure models
  • reduce unnecessary conservatism in exposure assessments;
  • and ensure consumer safety.

Output
A stakeholder workshop will establish the gaps in exposure modelling and the best ways to close them.
A peer-reviewed publication will follow to provide guidance to improve the methods to assess consumer exposures to food chemicals.
