ILSI Europe increases diversity and expertise in the Scientific Advisory Committee

The ILSI Europe Scientific Advisory Committee (SACwelcomes 4 new members that will contribute to continue shaping the scientific excellence and integrity of ILSI EuropeMr. Luca Bellomo (Herbalife, IT)Ms Susanne Braun (University of Hohenheim, DE), Dr Gloria Pellegrino (Lavazza, IT) and Dr Ricardo Rueda (Abbott, ES) will serve for a 3-years mandate (March 2021 – December 2023). Additionally, Dr Louise Dye rotated into the ILSI Europe Chair, and Prof. Philip Calderwho ended his mandate as Chair in March 2021, into SAC member.  

The new members, appointed by the Board of Directors (BoD), join a committee now made up of a total of 19 members. 

The Scientific Advisory Committee guarantees the scientific integrity and excellence of ILSI Europe’s scientific programme. It is composed of a maximum of 20 experts with more than 50% coming from the non-industry sector. 

What do the new SAC members bring to the table? 

Luca Bellomo MSc, is Government, and Industry Affairs EU (European Union) Manager at Herbalife Nutrition, (Brussels, Belgium). Thanks to current industry position and his background on European Political and Administrative Studies, his experience as former Policy Analyst, Government Affairs & Policy at Johnson & Johnson and his involvement at the European Food Safety Authority (Parma, Italy), Luca adds a perspective beyond science to the SAC.

Susanne Braun, MSc, MBA is Managing Director of the Research Center for Bioeconomy at the University of Hohenheim (Germany). Since one of her central task is to foster cooperation with various stakeholders and research institutions in the food sector on national and international level, she is fully supportive of the ILSI Europe mission. As partner in multiple EU research projects, Susanne is a valuable ambassador to support ILSI Europe in its ambition to increase involvement in EU research projects. 

Gloria Pellegrino is Scientific Affairs & Research Manager at Lavazza Group, IT. As chemist & pharmacist, Gloria brings a great expertise on contaminants, mineral oils, health benefits of ingredient and Genomics to the SAC. Moreover, she has been member of ILSI Europe Task forces for over 10 years, so she holds positive knowledge of Task Force’s work, an excellent experience to guide and innovate Task force’s ways of working. 

Ricardo Rueda
MD, PhD, MScVolwiler Research Fellow, Global Lead for Mobility and Metabolism Early Science and Head of Scientific Affairs for EURISA and MENAP regions at Abbott Nutrition. With this in-depth knowledge of both pediatric and adult medical nutrition, and his experience in leading a global strategic task force working on metabolism research, he is great medical asset to SAC.
