Oral and Dental Health – Prevention of Dental Caries, Erosion, Gingivitis and Periodontitis

During recent decades the dental health of children and adolescents has improved steadily in the Western world due to the availability of fluoride. Research has shown the capacity of fluoride to prevent caries, to arrest a caries lesion when it occurs and to heal caries lesions by enforcing remineralisation.

In the light of this, the ILSI Europe Oral Health Task Force commissioned a Concise Monograph entitled Oral and Dental Health – Prevention of Dental Caries, Erosion, Gingivitis and Periodontitis. It reviews the latest scientific knowledge and understanding of the important role of fluoride for caries prevention. It additionally informs on the importance of regular oral hygiene measures for the prevention of periodontal diseases, and also addresses the issue of dental erosion and ways to minimise it. May it contribute to further improvements in the oral health across all generations.
