About

Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) is essential for protecting individuals with food allergies, but regional inconsistencies pose challenges for consumers, regulators, and food businesses. This workshop will bring together key stakeholders to share insights, discuss challenges, and identify actionable steps toward a more harmonised PAL framework. Expert presentations and panel discussions will foster dialogue among consumers, regulators, and industry representatives, exploring science-based solutions and improving risk communication to enhance consumer trust and regulatory alignment.

Resources

During the PAL Harmonisation workshop, we aim to identify all key elements involved in applying Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) and explore potential instruments for harmonisation. Some elements may require legislation or regulation, while others may be better addressed through guidelines.

Before the workshop, please review these resources so you can participate fully and be well prepared:

  • Pre-readings: download here
  • Survey: share your views by completing this survey

Agenda

Commissioned by the Food Allergy Task Force.

About

The 4th international conference of the Food Allergy Forum will focus on food allergen risk assessment and risk management to improve the protection of the food allergic consumer; allergenicity assessment to prevent allergies to new food products; and maintenance and optimisation of immune health to improve prevention and therapy.

Conference topics will include:

  • Where are we? It's been 2 years since we met at the previous conference, which we concluded with some future perspectives. Where are we now?
  • True or not true? We often hear strong statements related to food allergies and allergens. What is true and what is not?
  • Allergen management. A journey of a quarter of a century from the first inclusion of "the big 8" in the General Standard for the Labelling of Packaged Foods towards risk-based allergen management. Are we reaching the finish?
  • Allergen analysis. Reference doses and action levels; has our search for ever more sensitive methods come to an end? And what challenges remain?
  • Future foods. There may be many drivers for new foods, new food concepts or new food systems. What's the impact regarding food allergies?
  • Gluten and gluten free. Fashion, belief, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, allergy, … What's the reason and what are the implications?
  • How to tackle food allergy? Prevention, disease management, or cure, where are the opportunities?
  • What to expect? Is the food allergy landscape coming to rest? Or will new ripples, for instance due to climate change, grow toward major new challenges?

Time and location: WED 27 AUG | 08:00 - 09:30 | Amphitheatre Bleu
Session chairs: Roger Fielding, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and Hannia Leon, ILSI Mesoamerica.

Background

Healthy Ageing: Exploring Biomarkers, Hallmarks, and Nutritional Strategies-This talk will present insights from a multistakeholder workshop, discussing key
biomarkers and hallmarks of aging, as well as nutritional interventions that can promote healthy aging.

Gut Microbiome and Healthy Aging: the Case of the Centenarians at Nicoya Peninsula-Drawing from the unique population of centenarians in Costa Rica, this talk will explore the relationship between gut microbiota and longevity, presenting research on how the microbiome contributes to healthy aging.

Raising Awareness of Sarcopenia-This final talk will address the growing prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults, underscoring the importance of early detection, prevention strategies, and nutritional interventions to maintain muscle mass and function.

Objective
